Can an AI agent check continuity across a novel manuscript?
Yes. CalliopeWriter gives a connected Codex, Claude Code, or supported local-model agent one continuity system for characters, scenes, point of view, knowledge, story events, and causal links. The writer approves canon. For an explicit continuity review, CalliopeWriter uses Git to find the scenes that changed since the last review. The agent checks those changes against relevant approved canon and manuscript evidence. The writer reviews every finding and decides what to revise. A continuity review helps find problems, but it does not guarantee correct results.
How the workflow works
- Start an explicit continuity review after a substantial manuscript revision.
- Review the scenes that Git marks as changed since the prior continuity review.
- Let the agent compare those scenes with relevant approved canon, timeline events, character state, and connected scenes.
- Inspect each finding and its manuscript evidence. Reject findings that describe intentional ambiguity or use stale facts.
- Accept or edit the necessary canon proposals. CalliopeWriter records accepted proposals in Git and leaves rejected proposals out of canon.

Limitations and boundaries
- An agent can miss a contradiction, invent a problem, or mistake intentional ambiguity for an error. The writer must review every finding.
- Git identifies changed scenes. It does not prove that an unchanged scene is consistent or that every affected connection was found.
- Approved canon can become incomplete or stale after revisions. A proposed update does not become canon until the writer accepts it.
- Hosted-agent work requires network access and follows the selected provider's account, usage, retention, and data rules.
- Writing, character work, timeline work, and local Git history work offline. A supported local-model runtime can also perform agent work without a remote model connection.
